When I rebuilt my Hubzilla server, my initial posts re: my homemade deodorant experiments were lost. I had ran out of the test deodorant from my last experiment, and it would be a day or two before I had time to try another recipe. Thankfully, I had a leftover stick of Old Spice something-or-other scent. Now, I had used this stuff for years and had NEVER had any issues with it. But after two days of being back on the Old Spice, my under arms were red and I actually had skin peeling. It was gross!
But it's all good, because that incident led me to find yet another home made recipe and
this one is the winner for me. It's fast, and cheap to make. Doesn't stain my clothes, and above all works as well as the commercial deodorants. Also, it doesn't cause me to itch or burn.
Natural Deodorant Using Diatomaceous Earth- ¾ cup cornstarch (arrowroot flour may also be used)
- ¼ cup food grade diatomaceous earth (My local farm supply store stocks this in the chicken feed section. Also can be found with gardening products)
- ½ cup melted coconut oil (I use 1/4 cup coconut oil plus 1/4 shea butter)
- essential oils (Currently using a 4:1 ratio of Cedar and Juniper Berry)
1.) Combine the dry ingredients in a small bowl.
2.) On low heat, melt the oil. Add essential oils until reaching your desired scent strength. Mix well and remove from heat.
3.) Gradually add the liquid to the solids in the bowl. Mix until it is the consistency of peanut butter.
4.) Scoop the contents into a container that will be easy to access with one or two fingers. I used a short and wide plastic screw top container that formerly contained men's hair product.
To use, scoop out a small amount on the end of your finger, and rub under your arm.
